If you are a returning volunteer, there are currently opportunities available for you! Please visit our returning volunteers section to learn more and apply.

There are some specific program qualifications and we encourage you to read the program catalog carefully prior to beginning your application. You will be asked if you would like to be considered for a different program if AYUDA is unable to accommodate you in your first choice. Please note, this application is specifically for new AYUDA volunteers.  For returning and experienced volunteers, there will be a supplemental guide and application is coming soon!

Accommodation, airport pick-up and drop off will only be available for the specific program dates listed here. If you choose to arrive in-country earlier or depart later than the program specific dates, you will be expected to make independent arrangements for these additional days in-country, including transport to where we will be staying during the first few days of the in-country program.

Please be ready with suitable times you could be available for a phone interview (about 30 minutes) to further explore questions you may have about the program and AYUDA. We will attempt to follow up with in-person interviews wherever possible.

Application Decision

Volunteers will be selected by the Volunteer Selection Committee using a specific protocol based on: suitability for the experience, skill set, potential for growth, and diversity of the volunteer team. The committee will include AYUDA board members, staff, former and experienced volunteers, volunteer mentors and local partners. The selection process includes:

- Application review
- Group and individual interviews
- Final selection committee meeting

While AYUDA will strive to select the most qualified volunteers, the selection committee will also take into account diversity of each volunteer. Diversity includes:

- Educational diversity (high school, college, graduate, post-graduate students, professionals)
- Diabetes diversity (volunteers with and without diabetes)
- Cultural and geographic diversity

The selection criteria for volunteers include:

- Overall fit and commitment to AYUDA
- Specific skills and qualifications for project
- Adaptability
- Level of energy and motivation
- Multicultural outlook
- Language proficiency (where applicable)

Accepted volunteers will receive an email notification on or around February 15th and will be sent an AYUDA Welcome Packet. This includes all of the necessary materials and directions to officially confirm your participation.

Note: Applications are reviewed and interviews granted on a rolling basis. If you wait until last minute to apply there may not be adequate time to coordinate an in-person interview prior to the selection meeting. It is highly recommended that applications be submitted as soon as is possible.
