Dr. Patricia Blanco's inspiration
(Campo Amigo, Ecuador '07, Bolivia '08 Local
Partner)
Dr Patricia Blanco, an Argentine Ashoka Fellow,
joined the AYUDA team in Ecuador this summer. Not
only is Patricia a doctor and recognized social entrepreneur, she
is no stranger to the realities of Type 1 diabetes as has been living
with the condition herself for over 20 years. Patricia was recognized
by Ashoka for her programs targeting the widespread problems of poor
nutrition and diabetes in Bolivian communities. Following her experiences
with AYUDA this summer she requested that AYUDA collaborate in new
projects to support youth living with diabetes in Bolivia.
“First of all, I would like to congratulate the volunteers.
They exude the qualities of selflessness, solidarity, responsibility
and diligence, all in aid of children and youth living with diabetes.
They were able to reignite my belief in the force of young people
capable of tearing down any obstacle that might stand in the way of
achieving a goal . I was also impressed with the international
team who always gave their all, who were continually invested in the
growth of each one of the participants, who worked so well together
and who above all displayed a vocation to really reach out and educate
all of the campers – I'd like to know when you found the time to sleep?!
Being an idealistic doctor and dreamer myself, I am frequently saddened
by the corruption that tarnishes the field of medicine; however, through
experiencing firsthand the attitude and behavior of this team I am
pleased to see that there is still hope. I was amazed to see how everyone
including the campers so diligently followed the protocols – it was
as if everyone felt responsible for the success of camp”.
