AYUDA: American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad
-----
AYUDA Home Page
“To learn about limitations and problems other countries face in managing diabetes at an educational, financial, and political level was an eye opening experience. More importantly to see so many people passionately trying to overcome these limitations for a common goal (better life for people with diabetes) was extremely inspiring.”
—Roshanak (Roshi) Monzavi M.D., CAI '03 participant from U.S.A

**  Ecuador Volunteer Program (Campo Amigo '08) admission is now closed, and our new team has been selected.

The selection process was incredibly difficult due to an extremely highly qualified applicant pool. Thank you all for your interest, and check back in periodically for new opportunities!

* This program has undergone several modifications recently, due to the evolving needs of our local partner. Please stay tuned for final dates. We do apologize for any inconveniences!!

General Information
All applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible

Depending on the size and quality of the applicant pool, applicants who apply later may be at a competitive disadvantage in our admissions process. Even if you are not 100% sure if you will apply or not, it is recommended that you contact the office with any inquiries or questions in advance, so that we may get to know you better.

Rolling Acceptance Policy

Our acceptance process is rolling: we review applications as they are received, until the final application deadline has passed OR until the program fills. You are welcome to submit your application as far in advance as you want; however, keep in mind that program details are subject to change.

General Application Deadline

Although our acceptance process is rolling, we strongly suggest that our applicants apply before the general application deadline to ensure the best chance of being selected as a volunteer. If a deadline has passed, contact us to inquire if applications are still being accepted and/or if there is a waitlist (see Waitlists below).

Interviews

You will hear from the Recruitment Committee within 1-2 weeks after your application is complete and received by AYUDA. The committee will read your entire application and decide whether you are a good match for the AYUDA program you have applied for. Applicants will first be notified whether or not they will be offered an interview. The interview is a critical component of your application, as AYUDA places a high value on personality!

Acceptance

Applicants offered interviews will be notified of the committee's decision as soon as it is made, and you will be sent an "Acceptance Packet" with the necessary materials and directions to officially "confirm" your decision to participate in the AYUDA program(s) to which you have been accepted. You will have 1-2 weeks to confirm your position. If you apply close to the application deadline, we may ask you to confirm more quickly. If you have applied significantly in advance of the departure date you may ask for and be given more time to confirm your interest in participating.

Application Fee

A $20 non-refundable application fee must accompany New Volunteers' applications. If accepted, this fee will be applied toward the Volunteer's fundraising requirement. Returning Volunteers are not subject to this requirement. Payment may be submitted online as a donation in the applicant's name, or by check, made payable to AYUDA, Inc. Please, no cash.

Recommendations

All New Volunteers' applications must be accompanied by two letters of recommendation. These letters can be written by anyone who knows you in a capacity that best represents your most relevant experiences and personal qualities. Please do not submit letters written by family members of peers. Letters do not have to be in any special format or of a specific length, but the recommender should concisely and specifically describe his/her relationship to the applicant, the capacities in which he/she has witnessed the applicant's relevant abilities, describe any notable personal qualities, and include personal contact information for reference. Letters must be mailed or emailed directly from the recommender to the AYUDA office (See Submitting Applications below).

Waitlists

When programs fill before the final application deadline has passed, we will start a waitlist. Once a waitlist has been started, you are still welcome to submit an application. We will only admit candidates from the waitlist if confirmed volunteers withdraw from the program. The waitlist is ordered, and will be determined by when you submitted your application and the quality of your application and interview. We hope that if you do decide to decline your position on the waitlist, that you notify the AYUDA office as soon as possible so that we may move forward with contacting the subsequent applicants in line.

Submitting Applications

Applications may be submitted by email or in hard copy to the AYUDA office.
