Born in Guatemala, he holds a MBA degree from the Edinburgh Business School (Heriot-Watt University, Scotland) and is a member of the doctoral program (PhD/DBA) at the International University of Monaco and the Université Nice Sophia Antípolis in Southern France. For 15 years he has led projects and programs in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa, and he is now an international consultant applying a businesslike entrepreneurial approach to the social sector. Juan Carlos has never allowed diabetes to become an obstacle in his life of service and adventure.
GLOBAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR mbasey@ayudainc.net Merith, from Great Britain, has been involved with AYUDA since completing her postgraduate studies on Latin America at La Universidad Complutense, Madrid in 2004. As an undergraduate Merith studied Modern European Languages at The University of Durham, England and served as AYUDA's first Country Officer in Ecuador from July 2005 to September 2006. Merith is now based from AYUDA's HQ in Washington DC with the aim of overseeing AYUDAs international programs and facilitating the promotion of AYUDA amongst the worlds diabetes communities while empowering more youth to strengthen and support their own local diabetes initiatives.
DIRECTOR OF MARKETING & IT etangarife@ayudainc.net Emily Tangarife, from Colombia has recently joined the AYUDA staff thanks to Atlas Service Corps. She arrives filled with new ideas and strategies to upgrade our image and marketing activities. Thanks to her B.A. in marketing and international business, postgraduate studies in international financial management at the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente in Cali, her hometown. Her previous work experiences were in the public, social and private sectors.
DIRECTOR OF VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT Kendra is a Connecticut native and alumnus of the University of Delaware, where she studied Anthropology and Spanish as an undergraduate. For the past two years, she joined forces with Teach for America as a third grade bilingual teacher in Washington Heights, an under-resourced community above Harlem, New York City, and while at the same time pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education. She extends this experience in education, compassion, and development to her responsibilities as Director of Volunteer Development with AYUDA. She has worked with the AYUDA team since 2004, combining her passions for global health, working with children, Latin culture and the Spanish language, and traveling.

ALICEA LIEBERMAN Alicea (Allie) Lieberman is a senior at the George Washington University in Washington DC. Majoring in International Affairs with a focus on Contemporary Culture and Societies, while double minoring in Spanish and Psychology. After finishing her Bachelors Degree she hopes to attend a graduate program in International Health Psychology. She chose to work at AYUDA because of her passion for human rights, health, children, and Latin America. By working with AYUDA Allie hopes to help the program to continue to grow while positively impacting the lives of hundreds of children each year.
Raffi was born and raised in Washington DC. Since his first trip to Ecuador in1995, he has been a part of the AYUDA team working on a variety of projects. In his decade of service for AYUDA he has done everything from graphic design, leadership training, and volunteer coordination to name a few. He is a recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Fluent in English and Spanish and a voracious world traveler with a fondness for travel in the former Soviet Bloc, Raffi has helped AYUDA’s expansion into Eastern Europe. In the beginning of 2007, Raffi moved to Barcelona, Spain to pursue work in documentary film but continues his work with AYUDA whenever possible.
Vanessa Ng, originally from Columbus, Ohio is currently a Medical student studying at the State University of New York. Fluent in English, Spanish, and Cantonese, and a former ballerina, she joined the AYUDA team in 2005 as a volunteer and continued her work as the Alumni coordinator helping AYUDA maintain relations with its former volunteers and many individual donors. Vanessa works with many AYUDA alumni coordinating events throughout the year in New York City. Especially notable was her AYUDA Gala 2006, which helped raise awareness of AYUDA in New York City. After studying further with the AYUDA medical staff during the summer of 2007 in Ecuador she is considering pursuing Endocrinology.
SECRETARY/TREASURER Jenny Osterhout is currently studying for her Masters degree in International Affairs and Development at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs. She is a 2004 graduate of Duke University and first volunteered for AYUDA in the summer of 2003 while living in Quito, Ecuador . She has since dedicated herself to AYUDA working on communications, developening materials and traveling whenever possible.
Jacob Osterhout became involved with AYUDA as a volunteer in the summer of 2002. His involvement has taken many forms, most notably attending nearly every Campo Amigo program; he is a favorite among campers worldwide. A native of Washington, DC, Jacob has lived in Ecuador and Argentina working as a journalist and writer. He continues his responsibilities as Editor or the season newsletter and continues to attend as many Campo Amigo programs as he can to the delight of the campers. Nicola was born and raised near London she has an undergraduate degree in English Literature. And in 2003, she moved onto a more vocational Masters course in Environment, Development and Policy at Sussex University. Wanting to balance these studies with international health development work, she became involved with AYUDA two years ago. Now Nicola works full time in the UK, before beginning a course in Public Health in the Developing World.
Steve is a Los Angeles native, fluent in English, Spanish and Russian. He has been part of the AYUDA team since the summer of 2002 when he came to AYUDA’s Campo Amigo Ecuador program at the behest of his Certified Diabetes Educator. He has traveled to many of AYUDA’s camping programs since. A diabetic himself, Steve has thoroughly embraced the AYUDA mentality, dedicating himself to helping educate others with the disease. His efforts range from planning and hosting the Annual AYUDA Black & White Ball in Philadelphia to teaching diabetes education classes for other volunteers. Steve recently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and currently is t be found working for Bain & Company in Los Angeles.
