Since AYUDA was founded in 1996, the organization has become the driving force for diabetes advocacy in Ecuador. AYUDA’s largest international volunteer program is in Ecuador and is focused around an annual diabetes camping program -- Campo Amigo Ecuador (CAE). CAE, conducted with AYUDA’s local partner organization FDJE, trains adolescents and young adults in peer-based education, to enhance social and emotional support networks and empower local youth to take a more active role in managing their diabetes. AYUDA recruits and trains volunteers to work in collaboration with the Ecuadorian diabetes communities and serve as leaders of social change.
Healthcare professionals also have the opportunity to volunteer with AYUDA at CAE by to serving as part of the international medical team; such experience is intended to improve the quality of care offered by medical professionals as well as encourage them to be leaders in child advocacy. Volunteers participate in a formal training program where they analyze local health and diabetes on multi-dimensional levels. Training culminates in traveling and working in the local setting at CAE, a weeklong overnight camp that brings youth with diabetes together in a recreational, educational, and safe environment.
AYUDA’s local partner is the Fundación Diabetes Juvenil Ecuador (FDJE), a foundation established by a group of parents of children with type 1 diabetes.
AYUDA works with the FDJE and their growing team of youth leaders to reach out to other youth with diabetes throughout the country.
