American Youth Understanding
Diabetes Abroad, Inc. (AYUDA) is a grassroots organization
seeking interns who are dedicated, hard working and self-motivated.
The interns will experience how a small non-profit organization works
from the everyday operations to the delivery of essential medical
support and resources to Latin America.
We are looking for motivated individuals
interested in Latin America, international health, youth empowerment,
and non-profit management.
We ask that all applicants have a strong
knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and other basic computing
skills. Familiarity with diabetes and a strong command of Spanish,
both spoken and written, are desirable but not necessary. The
internship will be unpaid; however an option for academic
credit or practicum may be arranged with
the intern's academic affiliation or institution. Based on outstanding
performance and dedication, interns may be invited to participate
in one of our international outreach programs in Ecuador, Belize,
Mexico or Bermuda.

Opportunities for graduate, undergraduate and high-school students
as well as professionals in transition.
Hours: 10 -30+ hours per week (flexible schedule throughout
the year).
Compensation/Credit: Potential for contract work,
part-time and/or full-time employment upon completion and review.

Internship Categories:
1. Web Development & IT
Interns with an interest in design will be able to create and realize
new visual concepts for our website and our advertising materials.
They will also have the opportunity to be the final contributing factor
for all written materials by formatting brochures and other handout
information. Interns will add graphics to these materials and design
them in a way that reflects the professionalism of their content.
Responsibilities Include:
-Update existing web site, as well as other web-related projects
-Great team skills, excellent oral and written communication skills,
online- web knowledge work will focus on updating the new AYUDA web
content and layout.
-Ability of creating and manipulating web images (Photoshop), proficiency
with HTML coding, knowledge of flash and Adobe design tools (Flash,
Illustrator), is needed.
2. Fundraising
Communications and fundraising are essential skills
in the nonprofit world. This is a great opportunity fit for a go-getter
who wants to learn about how to conduct non-profit and fundraising
research. The intern will gain experience in the development
side of non-profits by helping AYUDA's staff create and implement
a standardized development program. Interns will have full access
to the Washington, DC Center for Non-Profit Organizations.
Responsibilities Include:
-Draft grant/funding proposals for specific opportunities
-Research and identify potential new funders for
AYUDA's ongoing work and special projects
-Assist in fundraising efforts and event planning
-Create and distribute targeted mailings to expand
the organization's support base
-Participate in team meetings and conference calls
Master the ins and outs of non-profit fundraising
and development projects and build your kill set.
3.Health/Education
AYUDA is a unique organization which combines youth
empowerment with diabetes education. Although there are many
sources of diabetes research, there are virtually no organizations
with the same goals to bring these two things together in a sustainable
manner. AYUDA has wonderful opportunities for pre-med students
or students interested in public health to gain hands on experience
in a non-profit health organization through research, programming
and education based activities. Academic credit or practicum can be
organized with the affiliate organization or institution.

Responsibilities Include:
-Conduct research on diabetes, health promotion
or other AYUDA related issues in developing countries
-Write reports/summaries on research results for
distribution or possible publication
-Design and maintain a “health issues”
portion of our website
-Design & conduct inventory management of medical
and educational materials
-Consolidate educational materials and create resource
center for AYUDA programs
-Contribute to preparation for volunteer training
on health related subjects
-Assist in the organization and implementation of
diabetes training for AYUDA's volunteers programs.
-Participate in team meetings and conference calls
An invaluable experience for any student planning
a career in health or medicine.
4. Training Program Development/Volunteer Coordination
A cornerstone of the volunteer experience is participation in the Volunteer Training Program (VTP). Volunteers from across the country will come to DC to meet and train with the team during diabetes education and team building exercises and fundraising training. The supervising intern will serve as the main link between AYUDA's staff and the volunteers by coordinating the design, logistics, and success of the VTP. Creativity and good communication skills are key; proficiency with Word and Excel are must; Spanish proficiency encouraged, but not required.
Responsibilities include:
-Mediate program committees
-Help design volunteer training sessions
-Support and coordinate new volunteers
-Assist in the tracking and analysis of volunteer donations
-Procure donations of goods/services for VTP
-Coordinate guest speakers/presentations
-Coordinate the transportation/logistics of volunteers to/from and during the VTP
