AYUDA: American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad

Ecuador Country Program

Elements of the Ecuador Country Program

*VTP: Volunteers will first meet at the Volunteer Training Program (VTP) in April in Washington, DC.

*HOMESTAY: Volunteers live with Ecuadorian host families, most of whom have a child who will attend camp as a counselor or camper. Together they learn about diabetes in Ecuador and also experience cultural and linguistic immersion.

*LOCAL PARTNER: The AYUDA team collaborates with the FDJE (Fundacion Diabetes Juvenil Ecuador) for further diabetes training and planning of the camp.

*OUTREACH: The team divides to enter various provinces to recruit and educate children with diabetes and their families. Other members of the team remain in Quito to prepare for the camp.

*PRE-CAMP: The AYUDA and FDJE teams come together at pre-camp for teambuilding and camp planning. They divide into committees to take charge of the various elements of camp.

*CAMPO AMIGO: The camp is the cornerstone of the program. As many as 100 Ecuadorian children from all of the provinces meet for Campo Amigo, a one-week overnight diabetes camp.

What is Campo Amigo?

The name (in English 'Friend Camp') reflects the broadest objective of diabetes camps: to bring together children and adolescents with diabetes to have fun and make friends in a happy, safe, supportive educational environment. It takes its inspiration from the Mexican Campo Amigo , organized by former President of the International Diabetes Federation, Maria de Alva.  Read More

Long-term support

It is not enough to receive a week of education and inspiration at a camp, but rather children with diabetes require year-round support. Campo Amigo provides a training ground for youth leadership, empowering campers and counselors to rise to roles of responsibility, helping them develop into strong leaders for their peers, families, and communities. During the year, the FDJE continues to offer support to the Ecuadorian diabetes community, and national youth leaders carry out outreach projects and workshops to extend their reach into the various provinces in the country.
